210D, 420D and 600D describe yarn linear density, not a finished backpack's quality grade. You cannot reliably choose between two bags from those numbers alone. Compare the fibre, weave, coating, finished fabric weight and test evidence, then assess the seams, lining and carrying structure of the actual bag.
For a buyer, the useful question is not simply “Which D number is best?” It is “Which complete material and construction specification fits this use, and how will we verify it?” This guide explains the terms and gives you a short material-request checklist.

What does the D number actually mean?
D stands for denier: the mass in grams of 9,000 metres of yarn. For example, deuter's material notes explain 600D as 600 grams per 9,000 metres. That is a yarn measurement, not grams per square metre of fabric and not the weight of a backpack.

These values apply to the yarn designation. Ask whether a supplier's label describes both yarn directions or only one. A higher number means more yarn mass per unit length; it does not, by itself, show a proportional increase in strength, service life or finished-bag weight.
Compare six parts of the material description
1. Fibre identity
Ask whether the quoted outer fabric is polyester, nylon/polyamide or a specified blend. Keep the outer material and lining on separate lines. “210D lining” and “600D shell” are not competing alternatives if they serve different parts of the same bag.
2. Yarn and weave
Terms such as Oxford and ripstop describe aspects of construction, not the whole material specification. Request the supplier's fabric code and a swatch rather than accepting the name as a performance result. “Ripstop” should not be read as a promise that damage cannot occur.

3. Finished fabric weight
Request the finished mass per unit area, usually expressed in g/m², and ask whether the value includes the coating or backing. When low weight matters, compare the complete sample as well: padding, zips, buckles and lining also contribute to the finished bag.
4. Coating, backing and surface finish
Ask what is applied to each side of the fabric and for what intended purpose. A material may combine several layers. Request a sample of the exact construction; do not assume a colour swatch without its intended backing represents the finished material's feel or folding behaviour.
5. Evidence for the required use
Identify the property you need checked—such as abrasion, tearing or colour transfer—and request the relevant report or proposed assessment. Record the tested material code, method, result and conditions. Compare results only when their methods and conditions are meaningfully comparable; test names alone are not a pass result.
6. Construction of the finished backpack
Review seams, reinforcements, strap attachments, closures and lining together with the fabric. A fabric report cannot approve an untested shoulder-strap attachment. Put component observations and finished-product questions into the same sample record so that an attractive fabric does not distract from an unresolved construction issue.
How to use 210D, 420D and 600D in a sourcing decision
Use the numbers to identify candidates, not to rank them automatically. For a foldable travel bag, request samples that let you compare packed size, complete-set weight and repacking usability. For an everyday laptop backpack, start with fit, organisation and the required carrying structure. Then ask the supplier to explain the material options for that brief.
Example of an incomplete comparison: “210D nylon with backing” versus “600D polyester.” Without the fabric codes, weave, finished weight, coating and relevant results, declaring either one better would be guesswork. Does 600D mean waterproof?
No. Denier does not measure water resistance. Also separate a fabric's resistance to surface wetting from resistance to water penetration. They answer different questions.
- AATCC TM22, described by AATCC, evaluates fabric wetting under a controlled spray.
- AATCC TM127's published scope concerns resistance to water penetration under hydrostatic pressure and cautions that results may differ from rain or spray methods.
Neither a D number nor a photo of beading water establishes the weather protection of an assembled backpack. For a claim about the whole bag, ask what evidence covers the actual construction, including openings and seams, and the conditions of use. A casual splash demonstration is not a substitute for an agreed test.
A material request you can send to a supplier
Please identify the outer fabric and lining for [bag reference]. For each, provide the fibre composition, fabric code, yarn designation, weave, finished weight and coating/backing. Please flag any proposed substitute and supply the relevant swatch or sample. Our intended use is [ ], and the properties we need evaluated are [ ]. State which supporting reports are available and which checks still need to be agreed.
Keep this request with the drawing and sample revision. If a material changes later, ask which observations or approvals need to be repeated rather than assuming an identical colour means an identical specification.
